A growing oceanic carbon uptake: Results from an inversion study of surface pCO(2) data ArchiMer
Majkut, Joseph D.; Sarmiento, J. L.; Rodgers, K. B..
Concerted community efforts have been devoted to producing an authoritative climatology of air-sea CO2 fluxes, but identifying decadal trends in CO2 fluxes has proven to be more challenging. The available surface pCO(2) estimates are too sparse to separate long-term trends from decadal and seasonal variability using simple linear models. We introduce Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling as a novel technique for estimating the historical pCO(2) at the ocean surface. The result is a plausible history of surface pCO(2) based on available measurements and variability inferred from model simulations. Applying the method to a modern database of pCO(2) data, we find that two thirds of the ocean surface is trending toward increasing uptake of CO2, with a mean (year...

Aspects économiques et techniques de la perliculture en Polynésie Française. Contribution à l'étude de l'alimentation de l'huître perlière Pinctada margaritifera ArchiMer
Hautefeuille, Fanny.
Cultured black pearls are now the tirst export value of French Polynesia. This fast growing activity encourage the retum of the islanders to their native islands and the revival of the economy of the archipelagoes. However, the importance of the development induced sorne technical and economical problems. New reglementations are needed to organize the market and stabilize the black pearl price, the quotation of which is falling since 1990. After the important mortalities which occured in 1985-1 986, the mother of pearl general investigation program was set up. Il aims at the study of the biology and the ecology of the mother of pearl Pinclada margaritifera. The study of the nutrition of this oyster is part of this program and will contribute to the...

Assimilation efficiency in Bufo spinulosus tadpoles (Anura: Bufonidae): effects of temperature, diet quality and geographic origin RChHN
BENAVIDES,A. GONZALO; VELOSO,ALBERTO; JIMÉNEZ,PAULINA; MÉNDEZ,MARCO A..
The assimilation efficiency of Bufo spinulosus tadpoles from four localities in Chile was evaluated for two different temperatures (15 and 25 ºC) and two different diets (low nutritional quality diet (LQD): 22.28 mg g N-1; high nutritional quality diet (HQD): 47.53 mg g N-1) using ash as a marker of digestion. Results showed that geographic origin did not affect assimilation efficiency, while the relationship observed between temperature and diet quality was significant. Assimilation efficiency was greater for the HQD when tadpoles were maintained at 15 °C, instead significant differences were not found between diets for tadpoles maintained at 25 °C. Our results suggest that the effect of temperature on digestive processes is more relevant than its effect...

IMMIGRANT ASSIMILATION: DO NEIGHBORHOODS MATTER? AgEcon
Duncan, Natasha T.; Waldorf, Brigitte S..
The United States provides a path to citizenship for its newcomers. Unlike other immigration countries, however, the United States does not have policies that ease assimilation or directly promote naturalization such as easily accessible and widely advertised language and civic instruction courses. Immigrants are by and large left on their own when facing legal and financial barriers or seeking instruction to pass the citizenship test. Not surprisingly, thus, we find that immigrants’ attributes such as educational attainment, English language proficiency, and income affect naturalization rates. This paper analyzes whether naturalization rates are also affected by neighborhood characteristics and informal networks for assistance and information. Towards...

Model-Observations Synergy in the Coastal Ocean ArchiMer
De Mey-frémaux, Pierre; Ayoub, Nadia; Barth, Alexander; Brewin, Robert; Charria, Guillaume; Campuzano, Francisco; Ciavatta, Stefano; Cirano, Mauro; Edwards, Christopher A.; Federico, Ivan; Gao, Shan; Garcia Hermosa, Isabel; Garcia Sotillo, Marcos; Hewitt, Helene; Hole, Lars Robert; Holt, Jason; King, Robert; Kourafalou, Villy; Lu, Youyu; Mourre, Baptiste; Pascual, Ananda; Staneva, Joanna; Stanev, Emil V.; Wang, Hui; Zhu, Xueming.
Integration of observations of the coastal ocean continuum, from regional oceans to shelf seas and estuaries/deltas with models, can substantially increase the value of observations and enable a wealth of applications. In particular, models can play a critical role at connecting sparse observations, synthesizing them, and assisting the design of observational networks; in turn, whenever available, observations can guide coastal model development. Coastal observations should sample the two-way interactions between nearshore, estuarine and shelf processes and open ocean processes, while accounting for the different pace of circulation drivers, such as the fast atmospheric, hydrological and tidal processes and the slower general ocean circulation and climate...

New directional wave satellite observations : Towards improved wave forecasts and climate description in Southern Ocean ArchiMer
Aouf, L; Hauser, D; Chapron, Bertrand; Toffoli, A; Tourrain, C; Peureux, Charles.
In spite of continuous improvements of ocean wave models in the last decades, large errors still remain in particular under strongly forced conditions, often encountered in the Southern Ocean, where strong westerly winds generate some of the fiercest waves on Earth in almost unlimited fetch conditions. The newly launched China‐France Oceanography SATellite (CFOSAT) provides directional spectra of ocean waves for both wind seas and swells. Compared to Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), it can resolve shorter wavelengths in all directions, which dominate in non‐fully developed wind waves. Here, the assimilation of these CFOSAT wave number components is proved to bring more accurate predictions of wave growth compared to the assimilation of significant wave...

Nitrogen translocation in wheat inoculated with Azospirillum and fertilized with nitrogen PAB
RODRIGUES,OSMAR; DIDONET,AGOSTINHO DIRCEU; GOUVEIA,JORGE A.; SOARES,RITA DE CÁSSIA.
The productivity and the translocation of assimilates and nitrogen (N) were compared after inoculation of wheat (Triticum aestivum L., cv. BR-23) seeds with two strains of Azospirillum brasilense (strains 245 and JA 04) under field conditions. The inoculation of wheat seeds was done with a peat inoculant at sowing time. Plant material for evaluations were collected at anthesis and maturity. No differences in grain yield and in the translocation of assimilates resulting from inoculation were detected. Differences were observed in relation to N rates (0, 15, and 60 kg ha-1). N content in the grain increased significantly in the bacteria-inoculated treatments in which N was not added. This increase in N content in the grain with inoculation was probably due...

The use of biomarkers in Daphnia magna testing: 3. Rapid toxicity testing of pure chemicals and sediment pore waters using ingestion and digestive enzyme activity OMA
De Coen, W.M.; Vangheluwe, M.L.; Janssen, C.R..
In this study, 4 rapid (90 min) toxicity tests were developed using ingestion and digestive enzyme activity of Daphnia magna juveniles. Ingestion activity was assessed using fluorescent labelled latex micro-beads and digestive enzyme activity (trypsin, beta-galactosidase and esterase) was measured in homogenates using chromogenic (N-benzoyl-L-arginine-4-nitroanilide) and fluorogenic (4-methylumbelliferyl-B-D-galactoside and fluorescein diacetate) substrates. All assays and toxicity endpoints were evaluated for their potential use as routine toxicity testing tools for pure chemicals and sediment pore waters. The observed high correlation coefficients (r(2)>0.9) between the short-term toxicity values and the acute toxicity endpoint (24h...

Энергетический баланс и чистая эффективность роста плоской устрицы (Ostrea edulis L.) IBSS Repository
Золотницкий, А. П.; Сытник, Н. А..
